RECs were created to provide just such verification, allowing renewable energy to be quantified and traded. With RECs, utilities can sell renewable energy to customers who want to buy it.
One REC is produced for every megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy that is produced and sent to the grid, and includes a tracking ID. As a result, if your system produces 5 MWh of electricity, you have five RECs to keep or sell, and you can confirm that 5 MWh of your electricity came from a renewable source.
