HIGHLY DECORATED FOR A DEMANDING MILITARY PROJECT
HANGAR AT NAS NORTH ISLAND
THE CHALLENGE
These historic helicopter hangars are well-known and symbolic throughout the military, adding an extra level of pressure to our project. The arched roof, odd angles and shapes that give these hangars their unique character also made application difficult. Adding to the challenge were leaks in the existing substrate, the black color requirement and seagull intrusion. We worked with a supplier to specify a custom formulation, and were challenged to eliminate the risk of overspray which would have threatened billions of dollars worth of nearby aircraft.
THE PROCESS
- Removed existing EDPM built-up roof
- Applied 1 1/2” 3.5 density poly spray foam Nitrocoat polyurea basecoat
- Applied weather-resistant silicone topcoat
- Combated arched roofs by rapelling down building
THE RESULT
For our work on this unique project, Barrier received the National Industry Excellence Award from the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) – the only California firm to earn this honor.
“I appreciate the efforts your company demonstrated despite our very unique structure. Barrier displays an attention to safety and to a quality product that are sometimes hard to find in our industry. Thank you.”
